Cold, clean, shucked in front of you at the bar.

Open since 1971 and six miles north of the Emerald Isle bridge on Hwy 58. Everybody else is fighting for a table on the island.

They claim the original hushpuppy was invented about six miles from the building. Take that as you will, but theirs are good.

Off the beaten path, and the locals keep it full through the ‘ber months.

2383 NC-58, Peletier, NC 28584

Surry County Ground Steak Trail

Trail website: https://groundsteaktrail.org/

A ‘food’ trail through Surry County hitting the diners and burger joints that serve ground steak: a loose-meat sandwich that’s a Depression-era cousin to the hamburger.

It exists because cooks in the 1930s needed a pound of beef to feed more people. Story goes it started at the old Canteen Restaurant in Mount Airy and spread out to Pilot Mountain, Dobson, and Elkin from there.

The trail launched in 2023 and has grown since. Most stops are in Mount Airy, with more in Dobson, Pilot Mountain, and Elkin, plus one just over the line in Cana, Virginia.

Dobson throws a Ground Steak Festival in June if you’d rather do the whole trail in one parking lot.

Simple, delicious, cheap.

Personal favorite: Dairy Center
